"There should be an 'Abstract of Principles', or careful statement of theological belief, which every professor in such an institution must sign when inaugurated, so as to guard against the rise of erroneous and injurious instruction in such a seat of sacred learning."

Great Commission Resurgence

In late April, President Johnny Hunt issued a call to Southern Baptists for a “Great Commission Resurgence,” with an accompanying ten-point “Great Commission Resurgence Declaration.” This Declaration has generated widespread interest and conversation among Southern Baptists. The links and articles contained in this collection are designed to assist Southern Baptists by posting the Declaration in its various revisions and directing the reader to a sampling of published denominational perspectives on this important and timely subject.

Cooperative Program Promotion, Stewardship Education, and the Southern Baptist Convention
An Historical Review
- March 19, 2010
On February 22, 2010, the Great Commission Task Force issued a “Progress Report” on ways it hopes to assist Southern Baptists to “work more faithfully and effectively together in serving Christ through the Great Commission.”  The 32-page report contains a brief sermon outline, eight core values, and six principal “components.”  This brief essay will evaluate its Component #4 in light of the 85-year history of promotion of the Cooperative Program of the Southern Baptist Convention.
  SBC Executive Committee President’s Report - February 22, 2010
As a member of the Executive Committee, you serve in one of the most critical positions in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC).  The Convention relies heavily on you to be trustworthy and wise in your deliberations and judgments.  The committee always will have its critics, and lobbyists who attempt to pressure you “to see it their way.”  Those who live and die by the political sword in the Convention believe that you can be convinced of their position because of your desire for political good will.  But in the years I have been here, members of the Executive Committee have displayed rare and courageous resistance against those who attempt to influence your vote on everything from issues to officer nominees.

SBC Executive Committee Presidential Report - 2009 SBC Annual Meeting
The Southern Baptist Convention and the Great Commission of the Lord Jesus Christ have never been strangers to one another, and so long as the convention and her agencies and institutions stay anchored upon the inerrant Word of God and focused on the unconquerable Cross of Christ, she will stand against every wind of doctrine that blows across the great theological divide, against every ecclesiastic fad that promises innovation at the expense of confessional fidelity, against every subtle temptation toward uncooperative narrowness and unorthodox ecumenism.

Dr. Chapman's Memorandum to the Executive Committee
Dr. Morris Chapman, President of the Executive Committee, mailed the following memorandum to all members (trustees) of the Executive Committee on Friday, May 29, 2009. Dr. Johnny Hunt, as President of the SBC, is a member of the Executive Committee and received his copy of the memorandum directly from Dr. Chapman, along with all other Executive Committee members. Prior to the publication of a recent article by Tammi Ledbetter in the SBCT Texan Online and the Florida Baptist Witness on June 5, 2009, the letter had been released only to Executive Committee members.
  This One Thing I Do
by Dr. Morris H. Chapman
On Monday, April 27, I received an email and was surprised by the attachment entitled, the Great Commission Resurgence Declaration (Declaration). As I began reading through the ten articles of the Declaration, I rejoiced in the strong affirmations of our Convention’s biblical convictions. These articles listed many of the tenets of the faith that are critical to believe and live if ever we expect to fulfill Christ’s commission to us in Matthew 28:19-20 and see revival come to our churches. The email asked Southern Baptists to sign a webpage created to show their commitment to the Declaration. Some of those who knew about it prior to its posting had signed already.

Toward A Great Commission Resurgence in the Southern Baptist Convention
Southern Baptists have always been a Great Commission people. Christ's command to go, disciple, baptize, and teach is woven into the very DNA of our churches. By God's grace, over the last thirty years the SBC has undergone a Conservative Resurgence that has brought substantive changes to many of our churches and all of our Convention's seminaries and boards.

GCR Clarifies the phrase "to look to the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 as a sufficient guide"
Axioms for a Great Commission Resurgence
Following His resurrection Jesus spent time with His disciples for 40 days preparing them for their assignment once He had ascended.  He led them out to Mount Olivet where He would return back to the Father.  However, just prior to His ascension, the disciples wanted to have a theological conversation concerning matters of eschatology.  Specifically they wanted to know, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”

Let the record show that I am in favor of the Great Commission! If there is anything that characterizes Christianity, it is the parting earthly words of the Lord Jesus Christ. This was given to the church as a mandate to extend to all cultures, languages, and ethnicities until Jesus returns.

Give the Great Commission Resurgence a chance
Southern Baptist Convention President Johnny Hunt, of Georgia, has put his finger on a need and a sore spot for the churches of our denomination. For a variety of reasons, most unrelated to associational, state convention, or SBC agency work, we don’t witness to our neighbors and our churches are not making disciples at the rate they did decades ago. Energy, bright ideas, strategies, and cleverly named emphases have rolled through for the past 30 years with little effect on the decline. What next? President Hunt hopes he knows the answer to that.

05/27/09

Norman Jameson, North Carolina Baptist Convention, Biblical Recorder
SBC President Johnny Hunt plans to name a task force or study committee at the annual meeting in June to address the issues he raised in the call “Toward a Great Commission Resurgence.” Because nine of the 10 items in the declaration urge individual or local church action, they are likely to see little action. No task force, no matter how searing and insightful its report, can jump start a stalled Christian.

A document declaring the Southern Baptist Convention at all levels needs a drastic overhaul naturally begs for specifics and the “Great Commission Resurgence” author is happy to provide some.

Daniel Akin, president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and primary author of the document along with Johnny Hunt, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Woodstock, Ga., and current president of the SBC, have released a document called “Toward a Great Commission Resurgence in the Southern Baptist Convention: A Declaration.” And it seems that everybody is lining up to sign it. Well, not everybody. Let me explain to you why I have not signed the GCR Declaration.

Part of the reason Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) President Johnny Hunt was ready to “shock the system” with a strongly worded call to a Great Commission Resurgence (GCR) is that he and other leading Southern Baptist pastors feel a large denominational structure that depends on gifts from churches is not flexible enough to appreciate churches that sometimes do missions outside of that structure.
